Raw data is permanent. A correction is added as a new record, and missing data stays missing; we never invent values to fill a gap. Any result can be rebuilt exactly from the data, the code and the specification it came from.
The reason an idea was retired lives in a record, not in someone's memory. Years later, the question of why it was dropped still has an answer.
